Types Of Personal Alarm Systems

If you have concerns about the safety of the elderly, alarm devices are able alleviate them. Often known as personal alarm systems, these instruments are used to let someone listed as a contact that something is wrong. They let the neighbour, friend, relative or the actual service know an emergency situation exists. In this way, the alarms can help a senior when something potentially tragic occurs.

The increase in the number of elderly individuals has resulted in a marked growth in the market of such equipment. As a result, there are more than one type of elderly alarm devices available on the market. Choosing from the several models can be difficult. It is important, therefore, to be able to understand and recognize the basic types.

Types of Elderly Alarm Devices

There are two basic types of elderly alarm devices. These are non-monitored and monitored.

* Non-monitored

A non-monitored personal alarm system is itself divided into two specific types. Both are heavily reliant on the elderly individual having a network of reliable individuals who will answer their call and respond accordingly. The first kind depends upon specific visual and/or oral devices to attract attention. When activated they may emit a high pitched screech or send off flashing lights. While definitely eye catching and ear-splitting, they are limited to attracting only any individual who happens to be within direct hearing or visual range.

Auto-diallers or automated telephone systems are set up to immediately dial specific pre-set numbers. They have no direct connection to any type monitoring centre. As a result, these alarm devices rely on the person at the end of the line to be there to receive the automated call. The device will leave a pre-recorded message. It will repeat the calls going from one pre-programmed number to the next until it receives an answer. The person responding must push a specific button to let the alarm system know it has reached a live individual and not simply voice mail or an answering machine.

* Monitored

These type of personal alarm systems involve the wearing of a device such as a pendant as well as an attachment connected to the phone. The device worn by the senior is pushed when he or she is in trouble. It sends a message to the phone. The monitoring centre then reacts by first contacting the client to ensure the alarm is real and not an accident. It then puts into place an agreed upon response.
